Location. The setting for this historical bed and breakfast is Cedar Key, Fla., an island village of less than 700 residents. The Island Hotel & Restaurant is directly between the Back Bayou and the Gulf of Mexico, each a one-block walk. The City Park and Beach and the City Marina are a three-block walk.
Hotel Features. The Island Hotel & Restaurant, on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1859, and is constructed from seashell tabby with oak supports and wood floors. The hotel's lounge bar is adorned with murals of Cedar Key and King Neptune, painted in 1948. The hotel's on-site restaurant, offering both indoor and porch seating, serves specialties including crab bisque and heart of palm salad. Guests receive a complimentary full breakfast with toasted homemade bread and a choice of the house-specialty.

Guestrooms. The Island Hotel features 10 non-smoking, individually-decorated guestrooms, all with traditional ceiling fans. To preserve the romantic and traditional ambience, there are no televisions or telephones in any of the guestrooms. All guestrooms have private bathrooms, some with claw-foot tubs (bubble bath provided), some with showers, and some with both. Hand- cut wooden walls and floors add to the historical ambience.

Expert Tip. The Florida pioneers who built the hotel, originally a general store, made 10-inch thick walls - a mixture of oyster shell, limestone and sand. Massive 12-inch oak beams were framed in the basement to support the wooden structure. The hotel has survived countless hurricanes, floods and storms.
